1. Book in advance if you are camping in the peak summer months. Popular campsites at beaches, lakesides or park areas can be booked up weeks in advance. More remote camping grounds may be ‘first come - first accommodated’ so booking may not be an option.
2. Check on the facilities available at the campsite especially if you are planning to go to a remote area. Some camping grounds may not have power available or there may not be a store close by. Even if there is it may only stock very basic supplies.
3. Make sure you have adequate batteries and any rechargeable ones are fully charged.
4. Find out is the camping ground has ‘quiet periods’ and check up on security at the camp.
5. If you are camping with children check out any hazards such as rivers, deep lakes or busy roads before you go.
6. Read up on camping etiquette and make sure the children know how to dispose of garbage correctly and how to minimise any impact on the environment.
7. Ensure you have good supplies of sun block and insect repellent.
8. Pack extra clothes for the kids. They will find all the wettest, muddiest places to play and then be uncomfortable and miserable if they don’t have warm clothes to change into. In wet weather have waterproof clothes for yourself and the kids.
9. Take a supply of toys, paper and crayons to keep the kids happy on rainy days.
10. Lastly, but not least, have fun!
