Article brought to you by Cheap Camping Gear and Backpack Equipment
It can be a good idea to buy backpack equipment, sleeping bags and accessories specifically made for children. Encourage them to look after their own gear and learn how to use it so they will enjoy camping trips more and have a feeling of independence.
Tents
If you have young children a family tent is probably the best idea as you can supervise the children at night with everyone under one roof. As they get older it will be safe to let them have a tent of their own and more fun for them (and you!) You can buy child size tents complete with accessories and some also come with sleeping gear. They are easy to erect and the children can be allowed to set them up themselves.
Sleeping Bags and Mats
A warm sleeping bag and a comfortable mattress or mat will go a long way to ensuring a peaceful night when camping with the kids. A child will need a smaller sleeping bag to keep warm as there is less volume for their bodies to warm up. Children’s sleeping bags are usually lightweight and come with cases that make them easy to pack. Some sleeping bags have a drawstring to adjust the length to suit the child. These will also grow as the child grows so are particularly economical.
Children’s Clothing
Camping trips with time spent outdoors will lead to the kid’s clothing being dirty and wet. Take plenty of spare clothes, especially if you do not have the means to wash them while away. Waterproof clothing can be a good investment if you are going to spend a lot of time camping or hiking and it will stop the kid’s from being miserable due to being wet and cold.
Lamps and Lanterns
Lighting of course is a must when camping and it is particularly important when camping with children that it is as safe as possible. Battery lamps are the safest option and a head torch is also a good idea for lighting the area while hands free. Glow sticks can be used as night lights.
Wet weather
When the weather is wet camping can be miserable and boring for the children. Set up a tarpaulin for a dry area for the kids to play and plan some wet weather activities before you leave on the trip. A supply of coloring books, card games, books and toys will keep them happy.
