Choosing a New Fishing Reel - What are the Options?

If you are in the market for a fishing reel, the main thing you need is to know what sort of reel is required based upon the type of fishing you are planning. Three main kinds of reels are available and knowledge of the differences between them will be valuable to you as you shop.

The biggest seller among fishermen is the closed spin cast reel. The reason for this popularity has to do with the reel’s ease of use, as it is perfect for beginning fishermen or anyone who just does not want to have to worry a lot about their line. The closed face of the reel envelops the line so that there is less chance of the line becoming tangled. In addition, all that is required to complete a cast is the release of the reel’s back button. This reel is most appropriate for use when seeking small fish. It is made of material that is lightweight and does not cost very much.

Another type of reel available is the open face spinning reel, which is suited to fishermen with experience and who are better able to work the reel. This reel is for more seasoned fishermen who prefer it when they need to have more line control. Casting is easier than with the bait caster and you don’t sacrifice much accuracy. However, since the line is less restrained than with the closed spin cast reel, they do tend to have more line tangles.

Finally, the bait casting reel has the highest degree of difficulty. Even so, for fishermen with more experience and who thus are capable of handling them efficiently, they do have several advantages. For example, they can take a heavy line, have the most accuracy of the three and, with experience, are easy to control. Again, without experience, backlash is a definite problem with this reel, so one needs a lot of practice before becoming proficient in its use. Further, the bait caster is the most costly of the three discussed.
